Chapter Nineteen

He could tell Maddie wasn’t happy by the tightness of her lips as she strapped him into his Kevlar vest, working around the full weapons belt he was already wearing. After everything she’d been through yesterday, the things she’d had to relive as she spoke them, the embarrassment of strangers hearing it all, the nightmares she’d suffered during the night, he hated upsetting her. There was no way around it, though; she wasn’t going with them, and that was final. Maddie and Jess would stay here at their office with Mark, a JCL bodyguard Jack knew would give up his life to protect them—he almost had for Jess last year. No way in hell would anything get past the man.

Of course, Maddie acted more as if Mark was there to keep her in than to keep anyone else out. She might not have been too far off the mark on that one.

“I am trained for this, you know,” he told her.

Maddie ran her hands along his body armor as if ensuring it would protect him better than she could. “And I’m not. I know.”

“There’s no guarantee she’s there.”

“And there’s no guarantee she’s not.” Maddie glanced up, meeting his eyes. “No matter how unlikely, I need…I want to be there when we find her.”

The surge of emotion threatened to bust him out of the Velcro straps holding on his vest. Taking Maddie’s face in his hands, he stared at the dynamo that had upended his life in such a short time. He’d refused to admit to Con that he loved her—it was too soon, too out of control—but standing here now, seeing her courage, her resolve, her need to do whatever it took to rescue one young girl, he realized he didn’t give a damn what anyone, even his own psyche, said. He loved Maddie Brewer.

“What?” she asked, quirking her brow up at his stare.

Jack just smiled and leaned down, inch by inch, savoring the way her dark eyes grew darker in anticipation of his kiss. When his lips met hers, he didn’t wait, just pushed on through, taking her deep, sharing the power and the need that shook him to the bone. Maddie moaned around his tongue. Wet heat welcomed him, surrounded him, pulled him in. This woman was everything to him, and he let her know it with just a kiss.

“Ahem.”

“Can I shoot him?” he asked, lips still brushing Maddie’s. “Please?”

“Not if you want this to be a successful raid,” Con said, laughter jostling his words. He was enjoying Jack under a woman’s spell far too much.

Maddie patted Jack’s vest. “Go.”

He stole one last peck, then walked toward Con.

“Yeah, Jack.” Con patted his vest too, a little harder than Maddie—thump, thump. “Let’s go.”

Gabe stood near the door, watching them all with enigmatic eyes. The plan was for the three of them to join up with T. C. outside the warehouse he’d been watching for the past two days. It stood on the property
